Westbound Wednesday, SP Del Monte Near Logan, Calif. 1967
Author: FiveChime

Early morning departure from Monterey, mid morning arrival in San Francisco handled commute cars
between San Francisco and San Jose both morning and evening.
Here is the westbound crossing the Pajaro River between Logan and Sargents in the Fall of 1967.
Sorry about the quality from Kadak Instamatic slide.
Regards, Jim Evans

Wonder if it continued to display its train number
until it ended.

As a kid I always daydreamed about riding a train to Monterey. That’s a nice image for those of us who missed it.

Except for a brief period when it carried no numbers (Oct 30, 1960 to Jan 4, 1961), the Del Monte did indeed have its train numbers until the very end (April 30, 1971) from San Francisco south to Monterey. It was combined with commute trains 126 and 139 on Jan 4, 1961 until June 30, 1963 when it was combined with trains 126 and 141.

No train number was displayed in the engine number board between San Jose and Monterey after June 26, 1967. Only the locomotive number

Whenever I think of the Del Monte, it's not train numbers or consists.  It's Eddie Elkins, the steward in the parlor car. Mr Elkins was well known to important people in the Bay Area and he got what he needed from the SP commissary to serve his passengers properly. As an example, no other train on the SP system served fresh orange juice, but that's what Mr Elkins served. The SP tried once to discontinue the train but retreated under intense public pressure. The train lasted until Amtrak took over. Would that we had it now!

Thanks for posting this great shot of the Del Monte Jim. I had the Kodak 134 and not bad for the times. I have the 3005 on order and will be able to model your photo.
Thanks

This old thread had a couple of photos of numbers being changed on the Del Monte at San Jose and the train at Castroville with just the locomotive number in the boards:

Evan's earlier thread suggests the Del Monte
quit showing its train number in 1967, like
other SP trains, but looks like three digits
in the pic at the top of this thread. Maybe
taken by June 1967?

Did a rule require crews to change
numberboards at San Jose after 1967?
If they showed the train number all the way,
would anyone object?

The original question needs to be expanded on. After June 26, 1967, the SP discontinued the use of train numbers in the engine number boards, except for the San Francisco to San Jose commute runs. If the original question has to do with the number boards in the engine's train indicators, then yes the train numbers were changed south of San Jose per the link that Evan provided. but the Del Monte maintained its train numbers in every timetable and schedule up until it was discontinued on April 30, 1971. The train schedule boards in Gilroy, Castroville and Monterey showed trains #126 and #141 on the schedules. So the trains numbers survives up until the very end, although the train numbers were not displayed on the locomotive south of San Jose after the date mentioned above. Hopefully that expands and clarifies,

Dave
