Some GP40P shots
Author: thebluecomet

The venerable CNJ GP40P's have been around since the late 1960's and some are still in service.  Here are a few shots along the North Jersey Coast Line.

1.  Although it's 1977, this one still carries it's CNJ number and colors.  Passing Essay tower in South Amboy NJ.

2. At the other end of town, 4109 heads south toward Bay Head at the end of the wire.  April 13, 1980.

3. About the same location just looking the other way on the same day.

4.  From the Dutch door on CNJ train 5387 rolling through the marshes at Morgan, NJ  October 6, 1974.

5.  Stopped at the Matawan station on a cold winter day.  February 5, 1978.

6.  Repainted, but not yet re-built, 4101 on a midday train at Hazlet, NJ.  January 1987.

7.  Don't recall if the F40 had issues or this inbound rush hour train just needed two units.  November 4, 1987.  In a quirk of geography, eastbound trains to New York are physically heading west at this location.

8. 4105 passes Bank tower in Red Bank, NJ on October 18, 1979.  The tower would soon close and be demolished and the trackage re-aligned.

9.  Going away shot with a crowd awaiting the arrival.  Red Bank has always been one of the busiest stops on the line.

First shot could be a "Jersey Builder,"  all GN and NP cars.  I'm curious as to how they rode in those days.  And thanks for posting these shots.

Thank you very much for the post. The tower in the first shot backround looks very similar to Tower A in Cheyenne.

All of the "Jersey Builder" cars were formerly Great Northern cars and they rode very well considering the track conditions at the time.  With working AC, they were well liked by the long-suffering regular riders.

Hey Comet, great photos.

Tell us about the 6th car in your first photo.  Amid the BN and GN coaches is a stainless car that appears fluted.  Could that be one of the Santa Fe chair cars that ran for a few years on the EL, or is it of other provinence?

Thanks
Tim Costello
