Nostalgia & History > Amtrak Obscura: Furthest East for Superliners?Date: 01/16/21 08:32 Amtrak Obscura: Furthest East for Superliners? Author: march_hare Here we are in Rensselaer, NY in the mid 1980s. That's the Albany skyline in the background.
It's a Family Days excursion for Amtrak employees, with a pull/pull set of F40s bracketing a Superliner consist, ping ponging back and forth on the otherwise idle Post Road connector. I'm not sure, but I think this may be the farthest east a Superliner consist ever got. ![]() Date: 01/16/21 09:26 Re: Amtrak Obscura: Furthest East for Superliners? Author: Notch7 I saw a Superliner train on the Southern going from Atlanta to probably Alexandria Va in the spring of 1981. It was pulled by a F40 and a P30CH. The Southern always ran "School Boy Patrol Trains" to Washington on weekend roundtrips for various school districts each spring. This was an Amtrak version, and the only Amtrak version I ever saw, and the only P30CH I ever saw. I had to clear my local freight up for them.

Tours of the shops, a large display of rail equipment, including a walk-through passenger train including coaches, sleeper, and a D&H business car.
There were excursions with Superliner coaches on the (then) newly restored Post Road branch out to the junction with the Boston & Albany mainline (about 12 miles.) There was quite a line but I managed to get on one of the trips. A great day. John Atherton Date: 01/16/21 11:13 Re: Amtrak Obscura: Furthest East for Superliners? Author: DavidP The Superliner II cars were assembled in Barre, VT and delivered via the CV/NECR - Conrail/CSX interchange at Palmer, MA, about 100 miles east of Albany. But as far as Amtrak operations go, you're probably right about Albany. They have also pinch-hit for single level equipment on the Lake Shore a couple of times, with the train turning at Albany.
