Santa Fe Seventies show . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   in JAN '76, the power for the eastbound Super C was waiting impatiently, like a horse in the starting gate, for the cone to be removed on "Straddle Buggy" track three at Santa Fe's Los Angeles area Hobart Yard, before the train could begin it's less than forty hour race to Chicago. The 5702 was one of five of this class painted in this scheme to commemorate the countries Bi Centennial. The Super C ran for eight years and would end in just six months when economics would cause it's demise.

Great photo. Did the Super C ever detour over the Second District via Pasadena?

Beautiful !
Love those units and ATSF had a real classy Bi-Centennial scheme as compared to many that I didn't really like all that well.
EL and SP also had nice schemes.

Did UP winning the mail contract have anything to do with the Super C's demise?

According to Wikipedia, loss of mail contract in addition to premium price with normal service only taking an additional fifteen hours.
