One thing nice about a trip to Altoona, PA is the rest stop...
Author: jkh2cpu

Coming from Michigan and headed to central Pennsylvania left Fostoria, Ohio as the best choice of a place to stop for the day and watch the trains both at sunset and sunrise :-)

1. US Fostoria OH 2013-03-08 08:32 2879 CSX 451 I caught this one on the NW connector headed for Toledo.

2. US Fostoria OH 2013-03-08 08:32 2882 CSX 451 That first loco looked good in the sun. It would have also worked for a side-rod engine ;-)

3. US Fostoria OH 2013-03-08 08:33 2883 CSX 7613 And away he goes!

I was first in Fostoria in July 1964 with the Detroit gang (Ingles dad/son,  Hank Goerke, Roger Meade and a few others).   The big deal for lunch was a diner (?) that offered a 'Dollar Special'  malt/shake.  It was like a quart or so of milk and ice cream.  The thing I recall,  other than all the train action, was we were there on a Sunday and Ohio had a 3.2 beer law.  Our gamg had brought beer from Michigan and the tower guy called the cops when he saw us sipping out of a can.  They just told us to put it away until we got back to Michigan.  For this Californian such rules were all new to me.  Great fun back in the day.  As far as trains,  I was amazed to discover very long trains could be pulled by a couple of GP9s  or new GP35s.   No grades to deal with back there.
