Nostalgia & History > Tandy (Leonard's) subway shops in Ft.WorthDate: 05/05/21 07:25 Tandy (Leonard's) subway shops in Ft.Worth Author: gcm Nov 81
A few shots at the shop area. The Tandy Center Subway was originally built by Leonard's Department Store in 1963 from its parking lot to the store (0.7 miles). Leonard's received 15 PCC cars from the Washington DC transit system. Tandy took over in 1967. They acquired some PCC cars from Boston - a few of which are shown in storage. I'm not sure if any PCC cars were operating when I was there. The boxlike cars were built from some of the PCC units. Operations ended in 2002. Amazing they had that many cars for the short distance, here's a background from Wikipedia:

Bob Date: 05/05/21 09:23 Re: Tandy (Leonard's) subway shops in Ft.Worth Author: tomstp Those cars were heavily used. Bad mistake the city of Ft Worth made in not taking over this trolly with its huge parking lots.

While you got out in Leonard's store you had excellent closeness to several other Dept stores, and the court house. Jurors used it heavily. The tunnel is still there today.

Interesting that a department store would, I assume, have a railroad department. |
