A couple cattle pens along the SP

Westbound on the Sunset Limited passed these cattle pens somewhere in west Texas.
I wonder how long it had been since cattle cars were loaded here.

I half-way expect to see Texas Ranger Capt Woodrow F. Call to come ridin' up on the 'hellbitch'...

Interesting - As the Wendy's commercial famously asked, "Where's the beef?".

Haven't seen any SP stock cars since the early '70's so looks like they've been idle for a while. Nice look back.

The Interstate Commerce Commission allowed Western railroads to cancel their livestock tariffs in February 1973. Very likely that SP got out of the business shortly thereafter. In Texas there were contract movements through 1974 of cattle between Hereford and Amarillo, and a slaughterhouse in Kansas.
The ony other livestock movements I know of after the mid-1970s were Union Pacific's California Livestock Specials, a topic that's frequently discussed on this site.
Does anybody know of any other livestock movements in the country post-1980?
