Depot Friday: Afternoon at Waynoka
Author: santafe199

It was a simpler time when personal computers were a zillion years in the future. (Try: just around the corner... ;^) Santa Fe still ran lots of boxcars and it seemed like every train service RR’er had an “old beater” piece of transportation at his away-from-home terminal. Check out the line-up of vintage, rubber-tired hardware on this side of the depot. And while you’re looking, note the old Harvey House on the other side. All in the stark relief of low winter time sunshine, so typical of a February afternoon.

1. AT&SF 5644 leads an EB manifest stopped for a crew change at Waynoka, OK. Taken in February of 1976.
Original Kodachrome slide by William A. -Art- Gibson (WAG) Jr.

Thanks for looking back!

Another beauty. Lovely light, great composition on that curve, and letting us see the classic Santa Fe depot, and that healthy manifest train -- and that parking area filled with some of those...shall we call them "full sized"...autos of the period (and a nice group of them, at that).

Marvelous. Thanks again, Lance and Art.

What's not to like with this terrific scene? Gotta love the fleet of 'land barges' parked by the depot too!

In summer of 1973 got to spend several nights and days there as an extra board brakeman out of Wellington.  The Reading Room was kept clean and in pretty good shape.  Food in town was not the greatest.  Did not have to pack a lunch or backpack in those days to make the short runs on that district.
