Photobob's Way Back Machine visits Crockett in 1959 as the "San Francisco Overland" departs the station on its way to Oakland. The slide mounts say Drewry Photocolor.

Oh that is not impressive, PAs in different paint schemes. What great photos. Thanks for getting out and about at the same time I was learning to walk. Thanks for all of your posts, especially the ones in color. I don't comment much, but please note I appreciate and enjoy all of them.

Excellent, Photobob! I actually like the two daylight PA’s w/ the scarlet and grey one mixed in! Shows how things were changing fast back in the day— would’ve loved to hear the sound of those engines, too!

I guess those are heavyweight coaches on the rear?

I'm going to guess they were added at Sparks for the Reno-Oakland crowd.

I was liking the accurate green color on the REX reefer---they always seemed faded, dirty, or dark.  That new style (for 1959) Gyralite on 6006 was pretty cool too.  BSB

Excellent Bob!  I'm very grateful that (1j you were out taking such high quality photos more than sixty years ago, (2] that you've kept them in such great condition over the years, and (3j you are generous enough to share them with us.  Much appreciated!

I think I see one of the SP's home built domes in the consist...do you remember 28 having one?  The Official Guide of that era says it should,

Photobob, by far and away your SP photos are way superior to those by Steve Edwards, Sr.
I immensely enjoy your fine work.

What was in Crockett that warranted a station stop?

While many appreciate the modern gray / red scheme, at 17 in 1959, and having lived within earshot of the tracks for many of those years, I felt that the entire aura of the Espee passed into history with the demise of the Daylight and "Black Widow" schemes.  Notwithstanding that the gray / red scheme lasted more than three times as long as as the former ones, I could never get used to visualizing the new look as the "real" Southern Pacific.

I would have guessed they stull hung markers
on the last car circa 1959.

I'm so appreciative of shots from both ends...even as the rear end shot is not wide enough to discern the whloe consist.....surely the least of the photographers' concerns that day.
I can't see the dome suggested above, but it would have been regular equipment at the time.  It looks like there are four heavyweight Reno coaches at the rear, with lightweight , probably Pullmans, just ahead.  I can't see much else.

What a wonderful gift to us,
AA

I was only nine when you took this! Almost makes me wish I had been old enough to get to California and record action like this!! Not that your old, just wiser!!
