Erie and Reserve Mining 31 years ago OTD

A small group of Pennsylvania fans made a trip up to the Iron Ore Roads of Minnesota in September of 1990. One of the places on our list was where Erie Mining crossed over Reserve Mining. On Erie Mining it was referred to as "Reserve Crossing" (MP 14.7) and on Reserve Mining it was known as "Erie Crossing" (MP 45).  Top shot of EMCO 4212,4222,4215,4219 (F9A,F9B,GP38,C420) on Ore Empties heading back to the mine at Hoyt Lakes. Just a minute after the last EMCO ore car had passed we heard the sound of EMDs approaching from behind us on Reserve.  A set of Reserve Empties led by RSMX 1228,1225,1232 (SD18,SD9,SD18) heading back to the pellet plant at Babbitt. We knew that there was a loaded EMCO train waiting at Hoyt Lakes for the empties to clear so we hung around and an hour later we got the loads crossing over the Reserve tracks with an ABBA set of EMCO F9s (4211,4221,4224,4210). It took a little doing and our rental car was put to the test getting back there, but we got in and out without any casualties.

Great shots! Certainly not possible today. Erie Mining (now Cliffs Erie) has been out of service for many years now, and while Reserve Mining is still in service as Northshore Mining, I think they switched over to SD70s.

These photos certainly are a great reward for such a long trip. My favorite is photo one - Well-crafted scene.

Excellent trio. Back then, both roads were quite busy, but, Reserve busy enough to have a two track CTC mainline.

Great shots. I remember driving THE road to that site, in my own car. Was on a cross country trip and later discovered a broken shock, and we guessed it was from THAT road...

Better man than me. I tried to get back there twice, failed both times, once because of road conditions, once because of bad navigation on my part.

Our rental was a 1990 Crown Victoria and we didn't do it any favors on this trip. This shot was taken on 9/10/90 while we were in pursuit of a Missabe Ore Train headed to Two Harbors from Fairbanks,MN. This was one of many stretches on the trip where the roadway changed abruptly from asphalt to gravel and dirt roads. When they say "Scattered Bumps", they meant it. The locals had painted most of the big rocks sticking far enough out of the roadbed to take out an oil pan with Fluorescent Paint. Not exactly the place for a Crown Victoria, but we put over 2,000 hard miles on this poor rental before giving it back to Budget. It served us well !

"Scattered Bumps"!  It's been 40 years now, but I'll never forget that road (or the trip)...
