It was a road that just happened to be around another road I was interested in at any given time. The one exception was a dedicated visit to Marias Pass in 1986. Dedicated because it was the only railroad there, but also because my wife at the time was insistant on the Glacier National Park experience. This limited my time on the Pass to early mornings, and late in the day. The park was stunningly beautiful, but so was the topography the railroad ran through. Railroad's gone, and so is that wife! Here are a few morsels of BN images captured at different times, and with some uniqueness to the road.
top...This has got to be one of the most brutish beasts ever put on the rails. Not exactly a hit with the railroad, but here it is in its testphase. middle...Before there was a flyover at Grand Island Nebraska, this was one hell of a spot in 1983 bottom...Love this homegrown beauty. middle...coming around Tehachapi Loop in 1977. Believe this was a test of some remote control setup. There is also a BN B unit back fourth in consist with test gear in it. bottom...Fast fading Fs were still rather common place in Duluth area in 1978. Your images brought back a lot of memories. Not everyone who worked there relished their time with the Big Green Machine, but for me and other railfans, it was a very interesting period. And yup, I'd go back to the green-and-white, even with an "SF" added to the name. Much as I like the way that the four-lettered successor of today operates, and appreciate their tremendous business success, if it can't be red-and-silver or green-and-white, orange just doesn't do it for me.

Hohman Ave. Tower in Hammond, Indiana. The switch shown is for the connection to the Monon, which I have never seen photos of being used. The real giveaway in this photo for me is the gigantic radio tower at left. I recall it being near the Gauntlet Bridge on the B&OCT west of State Line Tower.
