Nostalgia & History > 32 Thursday - SP RS32s 4000 & 4001 After Retirement BayshoreDate: 09/16/21 08:39 32 Thursday - SP RS32s 4000 & 4001 After Retirement Bayshore Author: FiveChime These SP RS32's were interesting locomotives that I saw a lot of growing up on the SF-SJ commute line in Burlingame in the 1960s.
When they were new in the early 1960s, these 2000 horsepower 7300s were preferred power for the fast overnite coast piggyback trains, 371,372, 373,& 374. Later they were assigned to local freight service and finally, roadswitchers, and switching locomotives in Ogden, Utah and southern locations. On the commute line, they worked well as rescue locomotives when the FM's and Geeps failed and they could maintain passenger schedules fairly well with their quick acceleration. Top photo shows 4000 & 4001 at Bayshore after retirement. 4000 had a destinctive Nathan M5 horn like on all the commute H-24-66 locomotives. Looks like someone removed that in the retirement picture. Middle Joe Ward photo shows 4000 in the Bayshore roundhouse in 1967 Bottom photo is of 4001 with ballast running eastbound up Altamont Pass in 1967. In the late 1960s, 4000,4001,4002,4004,and 4005 were assigned Bay Area while 4003, 4006,4008, and 4009 were assigned to the Valley Regards, Jim Evans Date: 09/16/21 08:42 Re: 32 Thursday - SP RS32s 4000 & 4001 After Retirement Bayshore Author: FiveChime My HO 4000 passing through Martinez Station on the CMRS layout in Crockett, Calif. several years ago.

I remember when several SP GE 6 axel units were in Ft Worth waiting on scraping. SP had taken almost all items out of their cabs, seats, consols, brake valves, radios, you name it. |
