Surfing the hard drive....a few random fallen flags
Author: jbwest

A few random oldies that fit the nostalgia category pretty well.  The first is the DRGW ski train probably around 1967 (If I remember correctly the PV is ex-CBQ on an NRHS excursion), then a shot at New Orleans from 1961, and finally a shot from Chicago also in 1961.

Please keep looking in that hard drive please.  Monon and E-L together under the train shed I have seen, should look up schedule.

All very nice— check out the guy on the Monon F at Dearborn St Station! Washing the windshield or checking the horn out, maybe ?

I don't think I've ever seen a photo of a SP PA and a IC E-unit together before.   Thanks for sharing.

Along with those pretty faces, is a very nice rear end.

The EL in Chicago would be #2  Erie Lackawanna Limited which in 1961 departed at 5:10pm.

Wow, great pics.  A couple of questions -

- what are the two ski train cars just ahead of the PV?  They don't look like any D&RGW cars I've seen before.

- is the Dearborn shot late 1961, or perhaps even a later year?  I'm a little surprised to see ex-DL&W E-units, updated with E-L logos, in Chicago so soon after the merger.  I've read elsewhere that passenger services were left largely unchanged for the first year or so.  Also, the Monon F in the "freight" scheme is more suggestive of the mid-sixties.  Not sure when the Monon began repainting passenger equipment, but had thought it was later than 1961.

Really appreciate your sharing these on Trainorders!

Interesting questions.  With regard to the DRGW ski train cars I don't have an answer, but the cars immedidately ahead of the PV definitely are different from the ex-NP cars that make up the bulk of the train.  They look to be heavyweight cars modified to look more "streamlined" but have no idea of their heritage....maybe somebody else can chime in.  With regard to the Dearborn shot, you may be right.  I was there first in 1961, but also rode the Pheobe in 1966, so it might have been the second visit.  I can't find the slide to check the date stamp.

Yes, they are rebui!t 1910 pulman cars. Rio Grande overhauled 5 heavyweight coaches in 1939 or the Exposition Flyer #1000-1004 with sdaled windows, air conditioning and sfeamline roofs. They were repainted black with yellow stripes for Prospector service in 1949. They were soon repainted RG gkld and silver for use on the Royal Gorge, San Luis and Yampa Valley Mail. The were upgraded again in 1950 with narrower windows to. Lend in with the Pulman Standard equipment.

The coaches in front of those cars are non streamlined coaches 1006-1010 of the same cars but with sealed windows. The coaches in front of the green car in the center of the consist are the Ex NP 1915 coaches.

I believe the EL E8 is 819 and here is a link to a B&W photo from Marty Bernard collection of 819 at Dearborn in September 1961, almost a year after the EL merger. Note that this view shows 819 (with EL nose diamond) still having its portholes where the color photo in his thread shows it having no portholes with the Erie Lackawanna in the maroon band. Net: I'm guessing this color photo is taken in 1966, the last year of the Phoebe's existence.

Yes that EL E8 would have to be mid 60's as the side sheet have been replaced no portholes and the Erie Lackawanna ( with no hyphen) has been raised and placed mid stripe.

Given the overwhelming evidence presented above, and given the fact I found the original slide and its date stamp,  I can confirm the EL shot above was August 1966.  I rode a roomette in the sleeping car Tunkhannok from Chicago to Hoboken, and hopped off for this picture of the rear of our train at Binghamton (rerun of one posted previously).  Thanks for all the kind works, and also the feed back which I will use to get the captions on my website closer to being correct.
