N&W 6-axle EMD's by Ed Durnwald
Author: halfmoonharold

More slides I bought from Ed. I had some real trouble getting a good color balance on some of these. None of the color presets in Vuescan were quite right, either too much blue or too much yellow. The manual setting would not give me the sliders to adjust R-G-B, so I'm not sure what was going on there. So I made some B&W, and lived with the bluish tone on others. Freshly painted shiny black objects are notoriously hard to expose properly, but I'd still rather have these images than not have them.
1. Black NW SD35 1530 and blue SD45 1734 sit at the pit in Bellevue, OH in July 1971. They are still in their as-delivered paint.

2. Former NKP SD9 352, freshly repainted for what is possibly the third time as N&W 2352, sits in Norfolk, VA on 12/14/82. Earlier schemes would include Pevler blue and black NW. Behind is RSD12 250.

3. SD9's 2353 and 2341 show off their fresh paint in Bellevue, OH on 10/2/82. Note the lettering variations.

4. Former IT SD39 2304 in Norfolk, VA as N&W 2964 in December 1983.

5. N&W SD50S 6503 in Norfolk, VA on 11/30/83.

6. N&W SDP45 6673 in Norfolk, VA in August 1985. Built as EL 3642 in June 1969, this unit was part of an order purchased by N&W through its Dereco subsidiary. They were leased to EL, and later transfered to Conrail. When the lease ran out, they were returned to N&W/NS.

The VueScan colors can make colors way out of wack much better, but to really get what you want you have to use a photo-editor on the VueScan output file.  That is also true if the sharpness or grain/noise in the original is bad.  A simple editor such as Picture Window Pro 64 can do the detailed work VueScan can't.  That does not mean VueScan is not an excellent piece of software.  I've used it for years on different scanners.

Thanks all. I used to have a Microsoft photo editing program I liked, but they discontinued it several years ago. I'll look into that one you mentioned, Marty.

That SD50 sure looks odd with the earlier style trucks

Vuescan is scanning software meant to drive scanners which it does very well. RAW scans need to be taken into a PhotoEditing program (Photoshop Elements, Photos (on a Mac), Lightroom and several others)for final adjustment. VueScan is not a photo editing program and never claims to be as such.

Those are HTC trucks standard to the SD50.  What isn't standard is the triple clasp brake arrangement.
