An 8mm tribute to the trains we lost. Dearborn St. station
Author: Englewood

Posted with profound sadness for all we lost 51 years ago today.

From the collection of Ken Lanovich, filmed by the Garza brothers.

Chicago's Dearborn St. station in what I guess to be the winter of 1969-1970.

I assume these are the trains in the order of appearance:

0:00 - 0:11 The N&W Orland Park local being pulled back by a C&WI switcher.
Somehow that long distance coach got cut in.

0:11 - 0:17  The Santa Fe shoving in the cars for No. 1, the "San Francisco Chief".

0:17 - 0:20  The N&W long distance coach in UP paint goes by the camera again.

0:20 - 0:27 The C&WI 259 comes out lite when done with the Orland Park train.

0:27 - 1:09  The GTW "International" arrives from Toronto.

1:09 - 1:48 The "San Francisco Chief" departing.

1:48 - 1:58   One of the Santa Fe coach yard engines making a move.

1:58 - 2:25   N&W No. 124 the "City of Decatur" arrives.

2:25 - 3:04   L&N No. 4 the "Chicago - Danville Flyer" arrives.

3:04 - end    No. 16 the "Texas Chief" getting pulled back to the coach yard

Some great scenes.  In all my years, I have not previously seen photos of a N&W coach in UP yellow with red lettering.  Learn something every day.

Ken Lanovich was a good guy, still miss him and his advice on railroad airhorns.

Amazing how filthy those big GE's are.  While they could be seen in gangs of three on the Texas Chief as late as the fall of 1969 (after they were cleared of wrongdoing in the derailment of No.23 back in February), I haven't seen photos from the following winter showing similar sets.  Could this be the winter of 1968/69 instead?

Anything is possible.
No notes on the film box.

I was going by the morning arrival of the N&W City of Decatur.
The Official Guide of December, 1969 shows the Blue Bird still
operating from Saint Louis with a 320 pm arrival. The April, 1970
Guide shows the City of Decatur with a 1005 am arrival.

Perhaps an N&W expert on here can give us the date the N&W
train was stubbed at Decatur.

In mid December of 1969 I rode ATSF #16 from Ft. Worth to Chicago behind three U28CG diesels . Return trip Chicago to Ft. Worth  the first week of January was behind F units with #36C leading ( F-3 ? ) and several F7 B units.   Thanks for sharing this interesting 8 mm movie which brings back happy memories of riding the ATSF Texas Chief.  --UP951 West

Thanks. It brings back memories of standing there, seeing such things, and freezing in the process.
