.   .   .  on day two of a summer '87 trip, Santa Fe's hottest train out of Los Angeles, 891, was eastbound between Peach Springs and Nelson, AZ, on the Seligman Sub.

I'd call it kind of a rare shot - you've got a GP40X leader, one of only ten on the roster, and only two of those (3803 and 3805) got the SPSF paint.

Great photo, with the GP40X on the point it just screams speed.

Santa Fe, unlike SP and UP, got their GP40X's with regular Blomberg M trucks and the "experimental" trucks the SP and UP units had.
From what I've read from multiple sources the experimental trucks gave a very rough ride.

I agree.  Even in 1987, that shot wouldn't have been "just another Santa Fe!"  By the time it was taken, 3803 had already gone back to blue and yellow (photos of IT in SPSF paint are rare as hen's teeth), so 3805 was the only GP40X you could still catch in red and yellow.  Shooting it leading in great light and scenery would have been a prize then as well as now.

"Just another Santa Fe..." F45 until you look close and see it's an FP45.  Or is it an SDP40F?

The third unit is an SDP40F/SDF40-2, either 5251 or 5255 (probably the latter).  You can see the plated-over front steps that were unique to the 5250-class cowls in 1987, and the tall "Phase 1" dustbin on the roof that only 5251 and 5255 had (ex-Amtrak 511 and 526 respectively).
