South Shore Crossing Over at Kensington
Author: MartyBernard

An eastbound South Shore train just departed the Kensington Station platforms and is crossing over the Illinois Central non-electrified tracks to reach its own tracks. The date was April 28, 1977.

Back in the day, I heard the operator or dispatcher gives clearance to the South Shore with the reminder: "Watch the alignment of switches." Recalling the trackwork there, that was sound advice.

That section of track has been changed with a new alignment and eliminating the stop at Kensignton.

Looks like a lumpy bumpy ride.

I have ridden that move hundreds of times and always prayed nothing bad would occur.
The official speed across the plant was "tiptoe."

WOW!  Marty.  You really captured the 'feel' of the 'tip toe' through the rough crossings with the IC back in the day!

I think I made that crossing 15-20 times in the orange cars, and perhaps the same number in the new cars.  I still prefer the old "I think I Can" cars to the new ones.
