Nostalgia & History > Warbonnet WednesdayDate: 08/03/22 07:40 Warbonnet Wednesday Author: jdw3460 Of all the Santa Fe adaptations of the red warbonnet scheme to E, FT, F3, F7, PA, and a flock of newer freight units, I think the original (and ugliest) was "old No. 1." It originated as a boxcab and, after some further development it was modified with an elevated cab to provide a little more safety for the crew. It operated for years alongside the E-1s, E-3s, and E-6s. I saw it many times on the KC - Ft. Worth line, usually on either the Kansas Cityan or the Ranger. Someone on TO once accurately referred to her as an E6 after a bad head-on collision. It was either scrapped or converted to an E8M in the 1950's.
