Rock's rocky lettering progression ...
Author: valmont

Things sure got confusing over time ... picture 1 looking fresh and picture 2 looking fractured  ; ^ ).
Probably like many of you I have a wide variety of examples of the Rock's 'creative' placement of side panels ... and #253 ranks pretty high on that list!

Yes, when I worked on the Rock, on any given day you could see a real variety of locomotive lettering displays.

Thanks for posting.  The first shot reminds us how nice the Rock could look.  A friend of mine has a slide tray of the various Rock Island lettering schemes he's encountered over the years.  It's an 80 slide tray well over half full!

The locomotive in photo two is a true Rock Island "Who needs a spelling book?" locomotive.

I saw a photo of one that said "Rock LaLa Land" which was pretty funny...

I never tire of looking at the Rock's hood door hodgepodge's! But I also agree, when new and clean the maroon scheme sure was classy. In my opinion all of their maroon or red schemes were great as delivered.

I always envisioned a pile of GE doors outside the shop and they just grabbed the next door in the pile when it was time to get it back on the road. Any color or style as long as it fit.
