Heading to the scrap yard!
Author: Pattenburg

Back on June 16, 1986 along CR's Lehigh Line in Pattenburg, NJ, an eastbound train passed by my location with an unusual consist that had caught me off guard. Sandwiched between hoppers were a number of diesels heading for what I speculated was their last trip to Naprano's Scrap Yard in Newark, NJ. Seen here are two of those diesels from that day. In the first photo is 5800 but what railroad that was from is almost impossible to determine. On its flank can be seen some faded letters but as to what they are is a question mark. The second photo is of Chessie System B&O ?530. Any additional information related to these diesels would be appreciated.

The 5800 in shot 1 is an ex C&O GP7. The Chessie Painted unit is also a GP7, could be the 5630. Looks to be others on that train also.  Ben

The blue unit is C&O 5800, a GP7. The Chessie unit is B&O 5630, also a GP7. Note the ir tanks on the roof, which indicate this was likely  unit which had been assigned to passenger service, possibly the B&O commuter operation out of Pittsburgh whcih by this point had been transfered to the Port Authority.

Is Naporano still in business? They scrapped some amazing stuff ... Soo RS27's, SCL E3/6's, CNJ Train Masters, lots of CR RS3's, IIRC.

Not only 'looks to be others' but there definitely ARE others.

I thought the SOO "Dolly Sisters" RS27's went to Minnesota Commercial. They are supposed to be the only ones left. Ben

Pretty sure the MC's are ex-C&NW. I saw the Soo's at Naporano with my own eyes. :-)
