Nostalgia & History > Espee Coming and Going at Chester, IllinoisDate: 11/19/22 15:05 Espee Coming and Going at Chester, Illinois Author: MaryMcPherson On a day in June, 1993, I was passing through Chester, Illinois. Taking my life in my hands, I walked out on the Mississippi River bridge to catch a southbound Southern Pacific train passing Menard Junction (with the prison of the same name in the background in the first photo. Fortunately, I didn't get flattened or bawled out by the local constabulary.

I usually stayed on the ground down there by the switch at Menard Jct. - it just always felt a lot better, and that shots there were quite good in their own way. That narrow walkway on the side of a narrow, two-lane bridge was never very comforting, particularly when big trucks rolled by about half a yardstick from your back.
