U.P. SD-7 info. please…
Author: Texican65

Hi guys!

I just recently learned that UP had SD-7’s, although not too many I believe.

I was wondering if somebody could elaborate on them a little bit, how many there were, where they lived, what duties they performed, etc. etc.

Did anybody on here ever run them? Any good stories? Any good books featuring them?

Thanks!

Tex

Thanks Mike and Evan!

I had seen several of those TO postings, but not all of them…so thanks for the additional info.

Hoping to hear some stories from somebody who ran them.

For illustration, UP 451 lounging at the SLC engine service facility on August 11, 1974.  (I couldn't bear to crop out that cute yard shack.)

Seemed that they had rare Nathan M3 horns, unusual for Union Pacific.

Wow! Very informative Don…thank you so much for that, I throughly enjoyed reading that this thanksgiving morning. You answered all my questions, and I appreciate you taking the time to write that up. It would sure be neat to find a picture of the two in Liberia.

Tim…thanks for your great picture! What was that little shack used for…seems pretty tiny for a break shack.

Interesting about the horn also Jim, thanks!

Curious if these were ballasted heavy for these assignments?
The SP seemed to have a different weight for each of their classes, intending them for lightweight branches, or helper duty, etc.
