EL/NJDOT U34CH at Ridgewood NJ 1977

An absolutely bizarre squall hit just as my Main Line train from Hoboken reached Ridgewood on April 6, 1977. I have almost no photos on film where I caught the precipitation, but I sure did on this one. I remember getting soaked running to the front of the train to photograph it. My mom was waiting down the stairs below on the street to take me home.

Excellent. That's how I remember Ridgewood. FOUR tracks, stick rail, low level platforms! A U34CH still wearing its EL number and logo.

And piling on...

So much to like about this photo, as others have noted. I like the classic "railroady" suburban station on a heavy mainline look, when it was a railroad as opposed to the generic look of todays "transit" stations. The brutish U34, along with the weather, is the icing on the cake. I only wish we could hear the sound of that thing's barking as it accelerates the train up the hill to Ramsey.
