EL action in Binghamton - summer of 1972
Author: JPB

An eastbound EL Ordinary freight arrives in Binghamton on ex-Erie main 1 and the U25B-F unit-U25B power cuts off from the inbound consist to pick-up a pair of E8s before shoving back to the train.

Once the power backs to the consist and the train is solid it starts to pull east over the Prospect St crossovers and under the old Chenango St bridge heading to the Liberty St crossovers where it will pick-up a cut out of the busy ex-Erie Binghamton yard (the bigger ex-DL&W yard at East Binghamton was out-of-service) before departing east to BD interlocking and the Delaware Division. I'm not sure where this train is bound - either Maybrook NY for New Haven interchange or Croxton Yd in Jersey City.

Great set of EL photos - It seems strange to see such interesting lashups and think they were somewhat common on the EL.

Fantastic set of images.  Binghamton was a very busy place under the EL.  The long lens view shows the condition of the track back in the day all too well.  We've gotten so used to the sterile welded rail mainline tracks nowadays it's hard to think this was the norm in many, many places.

Beautiful shots !!

Lots to see and take in here.

Images #1 and #2 show the old Chenango Street overpass shortly before demolition. That is the Erie freighthouse in the background of image #1.

The scenes looking down in the yard show the Erie QD shop, now part of the NYSW operation. Near where the units are crossing over in the distance is the remains of the Liberty Street tower where the DL&W passenger mains crossed the Erie tracks to connect to the Syracuse & Utica branches. In the far distance is BD cabin (Broad Street Diamonds) where the S&U out of YO yard crossed the Erie to get into East Binghamton.

The last photo also shows the big State Hospital in the background on the hill. Note cars rather than locomotives at the shop, as at this time locos where serviced over at the D&H Broad Street facility under an EL (Erie / DL&W) D&H Dereco agreement.

Also in the last photo it looks like some International trucks out of Springfield, OH on the Dayton branch.
