Mystery Steam Engine near Barstow?

I saw this along a road east of Barstow.
It looks like a steam engine boiler. If so, does anyone know the history of it?

It's between Newberry Springs and Daggett on old Route 66.  It looks like an old industrial boiler or possibly from a steam tractor, but I've often wondered. Meanwhile, go a few miles west to 
Daggett and you've reached a great train watching spot with both BNSF and UP traffic.
