40 Years Ago Today - Part 2 (5/27/1983)
Author: rattenne

Photo 1. The second day of my Memorial Day 1983 trip to Denver to ride behind UP 3985 found us in Ogden for a crew change, servicing and swapping SSW SD45T-2 9292 (which we picked up somewhere in the middle of the night - probably Sparks) for UP GP40X 9005. The 9005 pulled the 9292 off then coupled up to Amtrak 366-304. Even though this is the California Zephyr, because of the massive mudslide at Thistle Utah, the newly minted CZ still traveled the SFZ's Overland Route across Wyoming but now as a detour.

Photo 2 shows the 9005 having its fuel tank topped off.

Photo 3: During our stop at Rawlins where we changed crews and serviced the train, one track over was UP U30C 2936 leading a Rio Grande detour. In spite of the fact that UP's Wyoming main was clogged with nearly double the trains due to the DRGW detours, the CZ mostly remained on time.

As we traveled eastbound over Sherman Hill, one of the many freights we passed was this one with UP C30-7 2473 West with a crewman doing a rollby for our Train 6.

Thanks for sharing these. A time when UP still took pride in running their railroad.
