GN and NP trains a day
Author: jayman

How many GN trains was Marias Pass seeing a day in a 24hr period during WW2 and how many NP trains was Bozeman and Mullan Pass seeing a day in a 24 hour period during the WW2 years and the peak?

In the mid to late 60s 4 to 6 through GN freights each way over Marias was the norm.  The peak was usually duirng the grain rush in late summer and early fall when there might be one solid (not unit) grain train a day and #81 would be mostly grain.  I have no data on either GN or NP from the forties.  In the late 50s there were only 3 ot 4 SCHEDULED GN trains each way,
The trains in the sixties were longer and much heavier than trains in earlier years.  NP had  5 or 6 each way west of Laurel in the late 60s with the trains slightly shorter and less heavier than those of GN.
