Fifty or More Years Ago - N&W 1607
Author: refarkas

N&W 1607, 1601, and 1606 are in Brewster, Ohio in October 1972. An N&W FM H12-44 and a WM locomotive are around the turntable.

The sad part is that the Chessie System should not have been given the Western Maryland Railway as part of their merger.  The WM should have been allowed to go to the Norfolk & Western which would have really changed the landscape of railroading here in the East.  For example, think of Cumberland, Maryland with two competing railroads as well as Baltimore.  Before the government allowed the Chessie System to absorb the WM, there was some real competition as many Norfolk & Western Trains came down the WM into Baltimore to the WM Port Covington Terminal.  Yes, I realize that the B&O had already owned the majority of WM stock, but as the Chessie System, they should have been made to sell those shares.  The Interstate Commerce Commission, which at that time oversaw rail mergers, really screwed up on this one.
Anyhow, thanks for sharing your photo.

N&W CEO John Fishwick viewed incursion into the northeast as a ticket to red ink. While I agree with you, unfortunately N&W wasn't pushing it.
