Some Conrail in PA, May 1986.
Author: Guitartrain

1. Not your everyday caboose hop. Conrail GP40-3198, GP40-2-3400 & SD40-6297 are leading an E/B with eight CR "Cabeese" in tow along with  quite a mixture of freight, including gons, TOFC, boxcars, COFC and who knows what else. Here, approaching the west end of Rockville Bridge. 8:30AM on 5-4-86 in Marysville, PA.

2. Long staples of Enola Yard, here, working for Conrail, a duo of GE's ubiquitous U23Cs 6904 & 6906 are making up yet another train for departure. 6904 was built in 11/70 as Penn Central 6704; 6906 was built in 11/71 as PC 6706. Early morning on 5-4-86 in Marysville, PA.

3. Look Ma, no ditch lights! Conrail SD50s 6809, 6721 & SD40-2-6405 are leading an E/B freight on track one of the Pittsburgh Line. 8:34AM on 5-31-86 in Lewistown, PA.

Very nice Conrail photos.  My guess is the cabooses were on their way to either a scrap yard or to one of these used rail car dealers for re-sale.  Just a guess on my part.

My guess since the train is EB would be to Reading Pa where the old RDG Shops were at and work/scrapping on many CR Cabooses was done at or perhaps to be switched out to go into storage at the old RDG Rutherford Yard  Ben

Great bunch, you've got lots of quality CR images. Conrail quality, lol?

A bunch of old cabeese also ended up in Renovo about this time. I took a look at some that a dealer had on offer, but they were in horrible condition. I ended up buying a CN car a couple years later.

Thanks for posting.  I was curious about the white caboose as I have never seen one of these before on Conrail, and this one clearly has Conrail markings.  MOW service perhaps?

Those U23C's were the standard 'hump' engines at Enola for quite a while.   I came across them in patched PC black in 1978-9

Nick, it's color is gray with black lettering and indeed, dedicated M of W service. It's a former Erie car, one of several that were transferred to work train service.
