Western Pacific Wednesday . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   on my last visit ever to the Western Pacific, MAR '80, the unit steel coil train from the Geneva steel plant in Provo was coming off the combination Hwy 70 rail bridge over the West branch of the Feather River approaching James, CA.

Great photo and impressive train--another road that would have been nice if survived longer.

Isn't it cool that California has TWO railroad loops (Tehachapi and Williams), and TWO exact highway / RR bridges spanning major lakes carrying mainline trains (Pit River Bridge for SP, and this bridge for WP)?  This bridge is almost identical in design to the Pit River bridge, from how it connects to the high concrete piers, to the highway on top and trains below, to curves at its entrances, etc.  Really cool, in my opinion.

The reson the two bridges look the same as they were both built by the State of California. They already designed the pit river bridge so naturally when the had to build the West Branch bridge the used the same drawings.
