No dynamics for you, engine crew.

True. I would imagine back in those days (of much shorter trains) UP's engineers used a lot of power-braking to control their trains...

Trucks on the leed unit look wierd. Perhaps the lighting.

I agree, but DB was not there if one needed it.

Back in the mid-seventies early in my N&W career, I rode a train with such a unit back in the power consist. The engineer was pissed. He had a few choice words about the power bureau in SOC. I think N&W may have fixed the problem later, but the non-DB unit would not pass through the DB circuit. Thus DB would not work on the units behind it.

Here's a better view of the trucks on a similar unit, this one in Denver on 8/18/76, also by Bruce Black

Here is a shot of N&W 1303 taken at Fostoria (OH) in 1976 which shows the trucks better.  This was one of ten GP35s ordered by Wabash just before the N&W takeover.  N&W cancelled the order after just seven units had been delivered.  N&W 1303 was later NS 1303, Springfield Terminal 214.

Good question, when did non-dynamic units start having MU pass thru?

When the customer specified it in the purchase contract.

Thanks, Mike for the info.  I couldn't remember if those low nosed GP35's without dynamics were Wabash ordered or P&WV ordered units.
