N&W RS3 units at Lone Star,Va
Author: gcm

Aug 1977
The last two N&W RS3 units had been recently retired but the railroad brought them back for two excursions during the 1977 Roanoke NRHS Convention.
Here we are near the end of the Lone Star branch with the first passenger excursion on the line.
This branch ended at a concrete plant which is still operating.
The units have cut off the train and will run around it for the trip back up the branch and on to Roanoke.
2541 was ex-Nickel Plate while 307 was the only RS3 the N&W purchased that was painted in the black scheme - thanks to krm152 (Allen) for that info.

I could be wrong, but IIRC they painted 307 specifically for that fan trip.

#307 was painted in NW black/white scheme in 1976.  I lucked into finding it in the open at Lambert's  Point on a July 14, 1976 trip to the Norfolk area.
The paint appeared practically new.  I can't remember the occasion for the repainting but remember having seen it in Trains and/or Railfan before my trip.

A big thanks to Gary for posting this excellent series.  Wish I could have been there.

The 307 was repainted in 1976 after collision damage repairs that occurred while it was working Lambert's Point yard in Norfolk, VA. It was stored in early 1978 and retired in May 1979.

The 2541 was stored in July 1979 and retired in December 1979.
