Nostalgia & History > Stopped on the Southern - Monroe,VaDate: 03/29/24 03:37 Stopped on the Southern - Monroe,Va Author: gcm Aug 1977
A few late in the evening slides from the reject box. This is a service stop for the T&P 610 on the Roanoke Convention Special from Alexandria for the 1977 NRHS convention. Interesting yard and station here with what looks like part of the roundhouse in the back of image two. The Southern Crescent stopped here as did Amtraks Crescent for a short while. Later, like so many other places the Southern closed down the yard and tore down the station. Today's photo editing software can help save some rejects and make good images from them.

Great views. Thanks for sharing them, Gary. /Ted Date: 03/29/24 05:15 Re: Stopped on the Southern - Monroe,Va Author: engineerinvirginia Go to Monroe nowadays and you will be aghast!

The merger plans called for a Alexandria VA - Roanoke ID run, but the "save the Southern" faction delayed implementing it until they decided to get rid of Monroe. Awesome shots! Any idea of what is the MOW car 910023 in the second photo. I have never seen it before. Thanks Tom Tom Daspit Morgan Hill, CA Tom's Trains Date: 03/29/24 11:12 Re: Stopped on the Southern - Monroe,Va Author: engineerinvirginia The place is so devoid of anything...it's hard to discern where anything was if you had not known,...the wide spot that would have been the yard and station siting...has mostly grown over....I reckon what space remaints is so because MOW can park trucks there when needed....

Very cool, I went and checked it out too. I think the Google car's driver stopped and waited for the train to pass. Monroe was a Division Point on the mainline. Crews on both passenger and freight trains changed here. Probably the most famous mention of Monroe is in the song "Wreck of the Old 97": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wreck_of_the_Old_97 Thanks for your posting. SOU initially wanted to assign me to work Alexandria to Monroe.

This is probably something for the Model Railroading discussion, but in the past I have looked at Monroe VA as a location to model. It would be a great area for that, especially with a steam or transition era time period. When the young women would board the Crescent in the mornings, to head north to D.C., we in the dining car were pleased to awaken and serve them.

Sweet Briar College for women is absolutely correct. Beginning with Public TT dtd 9/1/1971 and ending with last Public TT dtd 10/29/1978, Sweet Briar College was identified parenthetically by Monroe. Easy to find and no doubt about station for Sweet Briar College. ALLEN |
