Nostalgia & History > Another Boston Streetcar SceneDate: 04/16/24 01:17 Another Boston Streetcar Scene Author: ClubCar As I have stated before, Boston had some great streetcar routes with their many Pullman PCC Cars. Photo taken in 1971, now in my collection, but an unknown location.

Bob Date: 04/16/24 04:31 Re: Another Boston Streetcar Scene Author: DavidP I'm pretty sure the trolley is westbound on Washington Street in Brighton on the Watertown Branch. Service on the Watertown ("A") line was suspended in 1969, but the car shops in Watertown square stayed open, so equipment was regularly deadheaded on the A line for well over a decade. Actual passenger service never resumed.

That is a real shame as like so many other cities, many great streetcar routes were being converted to bus operations, even though the riding public preferred streetcars for their comfort. That appears to be a really nice neighborhood and the streetcars look right at home. This photo was taken by Joe Testagrose in July 1972. I'm guessing these pristine PCCs had been recently painted (or washed) in the Watertown shops and were being used for a fan trip (Boston Street Railway Association?) Here's a link to the photo: MBTA PCCs Chestnut Hill Ave July 1972 The October 2022 Google Streetview image of the scene isn't that different - track is still in place and used for equipment moves: Chestnut Hill Ave view toward Cleveland Circle October 2022 |
