Thanks as always, Bill, for the great photos from the past.  The MARC Train with the three units is most likely a Baltimore Chapter NRHS or a B&O Railroad Museum excursion train trip heading up to Martinsburg, West Virginia, or even farther to Cumberland, Maryland as for a while, CSX was still friendly in the operations of fall foliage excursion trains using the MARC Commuter Train Equipment.

These might be F-units, but your photos are "A" quality.

Photo 2 is a beautifully lit shot of three of MARC’s F9PHs. Nicely done. You’re right, Bill, it’s definitely not a regular commuter run, as 10/06/90 was a Saturday.

But I don’t believe it’s a Museum- or NRHS-sponsored excursion either. Fall foliage excursions (officially “Autumn Glory Specials”) were typically run in late September (for some reason that still escapes me). Further, 3 units on the head-end would be enough to power an Autumn Glory Special, which were no more than about 15 cars, all the way to Oakland. Not to mention AGSs typcially departed Camden at 08:00, and I don't see the train taking 1 hr 40 mins to O.S. St. Denis.

Rather, this appears to be a pull-pull, or, more likely, a push-pull operation, headed to DC for some special event. It is westbound on Track 1 of the Captial Sub, so it’s not headed up the Old Main Line (the preferred “scenic” route for an excursion train).

I even browsed the contemporary issues of Railpace, but I don't see any reference to this train.
