Nostalgia & History > Fifty or More Years Ago - IC 4035Date: 04/23/24 22:37 Fifty or More Years Ago - IC 4035 Author: refarkas Date: 04/24/24 08:51 Re: Fifty or More Years Ago - IC 4035 Author: ironmtn The IC was looking a bit tired on the platform and the track, but those E's were still up to the job of some fast running and didn't mess around. Neat to see them cooling their heels for a few moments during the station stop at Centralia. Thanks, Bob.

These were usually built by AT&T and were utilized for long distance telephone, although railroads had utilized them also for internal communications. These were so essential to telecommunication in those days. Probably there are many folks who don't realize that Southern Pacific changed that whole industry when they invested in something called "SPRINT" Southern Pacific Railroad Internal Network Communications (or something like that, correct as needed). Basically the very first fiber network, "You can hear a pin drop" was an advertising byline.
Today everything is fiber optic. Whatever company you may subscribe to, it was all started by SP when they were diversifying their investments outside of railroading. Maybe you needed to be there but that is what was. I see some of these towers today but wonder if they still function as originally built. Gonut |
