Nostalgia & History > Forty Friday - SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara, Cal. 1970Date: 04/26/24 08:53 Forty Friday - SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara, Cal. 1970 Author: FiveChime Although most of the SP F's were gone, this was still an interesting period on the SP.
The big SD units like 8418 would often be mated with lower horsepower units like in the photo with the GP9 with unique Nathan M3 horn and leased Rio Grand B unit. Unknown photographer. Regards, Jim Evans Date: 04/26/24 09:10 Re: Forty Friday - SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara, Cal. 1 Author: ExStarlightHog You had to love those beets. Standard draft gear; friction journals and very heavy. I didn't mind the empties, but you had to handle the loads with kid gloves.

Not sure what direction this train was going though. Regards, Jim Evans Date: 04/26/24 09:24 Re: Forty Friday - SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara, Cal. 1 Author: SPB Classic photos Jim. Great shot of the D&RGW F7B working the the SP.

they must be on the westward main, but last pic suggests not. Could the track be that good in the yard? Date: 04/26/24 11:19 Re: SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara Author: WAF timz Wrote:

Came off the mulford line and will cross over to the east main Date: 04/26/24 11:26 Re: SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara Author: timz Problem is, in pic 3 they look to be
crossing to the east main, then crossing once more, then once more. Date: 04/26/24 11:31 Re: SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara Author: SPDRGWfan I would have never thunk a D&RGW F7B would be on the SP beet trains. Very cool. Looks like it is from the 57xx series with the Farr Air grills, inless its an older unit that had the grills replaced.

They were found more on the Mina Local, but a few made it to RV and the Bay Area Date: 04/28/24 12:46 Re: SP 8418 With Loaded Beets, Santa Clara Author: atsf121 Super cool!
