A Switcher and a Century for Saturday
Author: swaool

EL SW8 368 works at Binghamton NY.  She was originally DL&W 508, later became Conrail 8697, Standard Steel 368.  EL C425 2458 would later become BCOL 808, and take an ill-advised dip in Seton Lake BC.  Slide mount says DEC 74.

I'd hazard a guess this image was taken early the morning of November 30, 1974.

It's at YO yard Binghamton and the EL 2458 is on train NE-97 down from Utica. That is the YO yard job next to it.

The consist for NE-97 that morning was EL 2458, 2551 (GP35), 2556 (GP35) and GP7 #1271.
The crew was on duty at Utica at 10:30pm on the 29th and pulled at 12:40am.
They arrived in Binghamton at 4:10am and finally went off duty at 6:25am.

Train delay was filed at Utica, putting train together and air test and at Binghamton for yarding train.
They were cabbed from YO to the Holiday Inn downtown for rest.

Engineer was Jim Dundon working with no fireman.
Conductor was Harold Eggleston.
I don't know the rest of the crew and don't recognize the two men at left.

The yard conductor was probably Jim's brother Richie Dundon.

The other alternative it was November 29th, but they got to Binghamton at 0-dark thirty that morning and the power did a quick turn to Utica.

Thanks for all that information!  Yes, it was a fairly early morning shot, and I looked back at the original slides and confirmed that the consist of NE-97 was as you described it.
