Mail placard on ex-Santa Fe baggage car
Author: gcm

July 1978
Getting some shots of the Lone Star consist in Houston most of the cars were in the morning sun but this 1953 Budd built car was mostly not.
It was so dirty that might have been a good thing.
Anyway as was the case most mornings a postal truck or two (or three) loaded some mail from the other side.
As seen, going to Chicago.

Passenger trains were a lot more interesting in the era when mail and express was handled.

Your photo of the mail placard sets this apart. I doubt I'd ever seen one before this. Great catch.

Yes, so true, and if our Federal Government was operating properly, all kinds of mail and express would still be going by Amtrak rather than by private trucks.  The reason why I say this is that Amtrak is a government paid organization, therefore mail should go by these trains as it's our tax money and government agencies should support other government agencies, not to support private trucking companies.
