Rebuilt Twice
Author: MacBeau

Delivered new in April 1978, SD40-2 3460 received a life extension rebuilding in August 1999. Framed in 2007 eastbound on the Gila Sub past the SP era searchlight signals at West Dome, it lives on today as SD40N 1657.
Be of good cheer,
—Mac

The 'heat waves' are actually very clean diesel engine
combustion gasses being exhausted.  I count 4 fuel tanks.

What's impressive is how little the pollution is ---- compared
to moving all that freight by highway trucks.  There's empties
in the train, too.  So, any comparison would include an equivalent
amount of trailers on the highway, being hauled empty.

Yes, trucks burn 'clean', too; however, the hundreds of equivalent
tractors needed to replace locos, together produce more total pollution
and dangerously more, if in city environments.

Neat image -- looks like an SD45 rebuild and an SD60M in tow as well. Those were the days.
