For Amtrak's birthday, a salute to its most famous electric
Author: Roadjob

Amtrak was never at the top of my thrill list, and for sure most of it would have died without the contributions of the American taxpayer. But for today, we'll celebrate the backbone of its early electric fleet in honor of its b-day.With possibly the most popular non steam engine ever photographed, the GG1. The Gs oozed class, and were able to rack up millions of miles running up and down the Northeast Corridor, and west to Harrisburg. The first attempt to replace them, the E60 never quite measured up. The Swedish meatballs that followed were never going to be the long term survivors that the Gs were. Time and technology did the Gs in, but their "PCB problem" actually may have been a backhand gift. Many survived to take their place in museums around the country. A shame some of the diesels could not have had the same issue. It would have been nice to see some Centipedes or Train Masters.

The dramatic first set of shots show the character of the big G's so well.

All very nice photos of the mighty GG-1's.  They really moved fast and were very dependable for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and into the Conrail era, along with the ones that continued to pull those Amtrak Trains.

Note the first and 3rd photos show one of the short-lived HEP power cars made out of ex-UP coaches.  This was a temporary solution to getting the new Amfleet cars on the road behind GG-1's, and before the F40's were delivered which could provide HEP directly for the Amfleet coaches.

The pan shot is terrific, and I love the fifth shot, with one unit lit, the other shaded and framed by the arch.
