SOO Train on Chessie System near G.R., MI
Author: zars

I was working on a Chessie System rail gang in 1985 and brought my camera to work.  We were waiting for the track on the former C&O (PM) line east of Grand Rapids, MI to start the day's work.  A SOO caboose on a CPR train passes, meaning we would be starting work shortly.  The on-track machinery was parked overnight on a spur in the direction the train is going.  After this train passes the switch to the spur, the on-track machines will roll out to this point; where the fuel truck on the right will fill their tanks then proceed to the right to where yesterday's work ended.  CPR, through its SOO subsidiary had trackage rights on Chessie System between Detroit and Chicago and ran at least one train each way every day.  Today, CP uses rights on NS for the majority of its traffic between these cities; though CP also runs a train from Chicago on CSX that interchanges in the Buffalo, NY area.
