Hereford varnish?

Once again the old wisdom rings true: “If you hang around the RR long enough you’ll see something you’ve never seen before”. And probably never will again...

1. Colonial Hereford Farm of Midville, GA. This car was spotted in North Platte, NE on September 15, 1969.
C G Parsons copy slide from the Tony Fey collection. Photographer is unknown.

I believe the car was a former Southern Railway coach grill car rebuilt at Hayne Shop - Spartanburg SC.  They were used on trains like the Carolina Special and the Kansas City-Florida Special.

I agree. The series was Southern 3100-3103.

The external appearance certainly says Southern post war rebuild, and the windows and door line up with the diagram.

I vaguely recall hearing that disposition.

Good question, though at the time, not too many passenger trains were left.

Also, did the car actually carry the thoroughbred livestock?

Found this car in Midville, Ga in January 1977 sitting on a siding off the nearly abandond Georgia and Florida RR.

Reportedly a Southern Railway modernized 1000 series coach by Spartanburg shops.  Not Frisco.

No, the coaches used were not already modernized,

I suspect it carried livestock in the form of Grade A Choice steaks.
