B&O What Is It?, MOW?, no caption, slide says July 1972.  Bill Howes photo, Reid Adams collection

Charley Hill just commented
"It appears to be a Yard Sweeper. It mainly was used in the yards to clean up spills of grain and other stuff laying between tracks. It usually had air dump cars (or open top hoppers attached to it at the belt end to catch the crap it picked up, usually very smelly rotten grain. I would end up piloting it when it was in the yard, since our rules stated that if it had drawbars, then it was considered an engine and thus needed a pilot to throw switches for it."

The official name is a yaed cleaner. It had a brush that had about 1' steel bristles and it dug dirt out from on top of crossties before anyyard rebuilfing was done. It had 3 side dumps that went with it. It would fill then and a yard work train would go dump them and eventually the roadmaster woukd get a bulldozwe or motor grader and smuuth out the piles. It was a susty nassty work train if it was dry.

Please excuse the spelling in my previous post. I had a cat in my lap and didn't have on my glasses.
