One correction tho...the name of the tower in the first picture is "Mills". zr190 Date: 09/04/24 15:17 Re: 9 of Various C&NW Rolling Stock, Buildings, etc. Author: King_Coal Cedar Rapids seems like a hopping place. Thanks for sharing these..
Date: 09/05/24 03:53 Re: 9 of Various C&NW Rolling Stock, Buildings, etc. Author: 57A26 Beverly tower was under the "new" US 30 overpass. It was the west end junction where the freight bypass left the original main line into Cedar Rapids and also where the Milwaukee's Marion to Ottumwa line crossed the CNW. The crossing and the tower were both removed in the early/mid 1980s.

Right across the street from the Clinton Knee Highs drum and bugle corps. Nice to hear bright and early on a Saturday morning after an all nighter on the Galena Division. Just goes to show how really old I am.

The shot was taken before the current US30 overpass was built. By the time I got to Cedar Rapids in 1985, the tower was closed and the crossing automated. That summer, the diamonds were removed, and in early 1986, the tower was demolished.

In the last years of Milwaukee operation the tower was unmanned. if a MILW train, and later Crandic train, needed to use the diamond, the operator at Beverly would go to the tower and line up the interlocking. The Crandic built a new connection from their Corn Sweeteners yard complex south of the CNW that allowed abandoning the diamond, and the tower. The signals at the crossing were all semaphores. |
