Some Rio Grande from 1982 trip
Author: bobdavis

Two good friends and I spent the better part of a 12-day summer railfanning trip in 1982 along the Rio Grande in Colorado.  As usual, the DRGW didn't disappoint and the weather was generally very good.  Attached are six pictures from that  memorable trip.  On June 26 we got westbound hotshot 187 west of Yarmony, Colo. with eight units and 62 cars, probably a power balancing move.  The next morning we got westbound 171 at Pando on the Tennessee Pass line with four units and another 62-car train.  Then on June 30 we got a short (31 cars) westbound 187 leaving Bond.  187 was always a dependable morning w/b out of Denver.

On July 1st we got eastbound hotshot 134-6 with 65 cars.  My notes only show "west of Bond" but if anyone knows the location feel free to chip in.  A second section numbered "234-6" followed less than 15 minutes later.  Photo 5 on July 2 was an extra treat - an 82-car military train numbered 236-6 powered by three Union Pacific units.  We shot it several times, the one attached being at Fraser.  We headed for the Joint Line the next day and got one more Rio Grande shot on the 4th - northbound 166 at Palmer Lake with six units and 71 cars including 45 hoppers.  It was quite a trip!

Thanks for posting these very nice photos esp, the  last one.  Rio Grande mostly powered their trains heavily allowing them to make time on sections of the line when they could  make up for the slow sections.
