Uncommon Union Pacific Power from the early 80's
Author: PasadenaSub

Today\'s common power on the Union Pacific would probably be SD70M\'s and the many GE six-axle wide cab variants. In the early 80\'s, SD40-2\'s and C30-7\'s would have been considered the standard road power. Here\'s three shots of what I consider to be out of the ordinary units from the time. All shots Kodachrome 64.

GP9 #195 at Council Bluff, IA on 8/31/82. As quickly as UP was modernizing at the time, I was quite surprised to find this high-hood beauty still around. She would stay on the roster another 3 years before being scrapped.

SD45 #45 at San Bernardino, CA on 4/7/82. Teamed with a Rio Grande and another UP \'45, she was heading up the coal train to Kaiser Steel in nearby Fontana when I got this shot from the platform of the Amtrak depot there.

GP35 #757 at Hastings, NE on 8/30/82. UP only purchased 22 examples of this model from EMD in 1964.

Unfortunately, she was scrapped in 1984. Here\'s a detailed history from Don Strack\'s site:

Here\'s ex-UP #185 alive and well at AMTK\'s Race St. Engine Terminal in Philadelphia, PA, on 5/10/03. Gerry

Thank goodness SP kept their old crappy power around for another 15 years.
