Nostalgia & History > Warbonnet Wednesday: Needles Sub with clouds!Date: 10/30/24 04:11 Warbonnet Wednesday: Needles Sub with clouds! Author: santafe199 Another fantastic slide from the camera of Mr Len Kratz. Precise location not provided. But ya gotta love those big white fluffy clouds...
1. AT&SF 202 near Klondike, CA* on May 6, 1995. Original AI slide by Len Kratz. Thanks for looking back! Lance Garrels santafe199 *By guess & by golly I'll use Klondike, CA as the location for Len's shot... Edited 1 time(s). Date: 10/30/24 11:00 Re: Needles Sub with clouds! Author: timz Let's see if we can solve this one. One vote
for a westbound here https://mapper.acme.com/?ll=34.64234,-116.00163&z=15&t=S&marker0=34.64235%2C-116.00171 and one for an eastbound here https://mapper.acme.com/?ll=34.94760,-114.80670&z=15&t=S&marker0=34.95104%2C-114.80093 Can't rule either one out yet. Maybe Streetview will give us a good enough look at the background mountains; if not, need a pretty close look at the topo map. Based on the sun angle, I'm leaning toward Ibis. But why send an eastward pig train around the sharp curve? (I assume they had some sort of CTC here by then.) As it happens, the tangent at Ibis is near parallel to Highway 95 https://maps.app.goo.gl/YhxzAWZvojywo9co9 which is pointed at not much mountains. A big vote against Ibis. Edited 3 time(s). Author: chakk The very narrow width of the shadow on the fireman's side of the engine indicates the photo was taken near 1 PM Pacific Daylight Time on this day in May.
So the sun is almost due south and the engine is almost facing due east. Are there curves on the ATSF route in that area where westbound trains due a 180 so that they wind up facing nearly east for part of their run? Hakk Date: 10/30/24 14:32 Re: Needles Sub with clouds! Author: santafe199 I took a quick look at Google maps before I left town. There appears to be a sweeping curve near an old location called Klondike that would seem to match up with Len’s shot. If that is indeed the right curve, then I will use Klondike as the location. With my thanks to ‘Super_C’…
