Nostalgia & History > SP RouteDate: 07/16/03 23:57 SP Route Author: Geep IS the route from El Centro, CA to Holtville and north of Holtville still active today in U.P. hands? what commodities are hauled? What amount of traffic? I am referring to the Holtville interurban Railway. If its abandoned, are tracks still in place?
Anybody who can deeply explain or at least inform me is appreciated! Thanks, and photos welcomed! Date: 02/04/05 10:22 Re: SP Route Author: skeeter4810 The old SP Route from El Centro to Holtville is out of service and is now known as the Holtville Industrial Lead. There is only 2 miles of this lead that are used and that is it. They service molasses tanks at 3rd St., And a cement plant at Dogwood Rd. The Holtville branch was abandoned in 1994. The old Sandia Branch (Orita) was discontinued in 1990, and all rail was torn up in 2001. Bits and pieces still remain from El Centro to Holtville but that is being torn up as well.
