Transition from Sandwich to Plano with the Denver Zephyr
Author: MartyBernard

I have shown you a bunch of Roger Puta's and my Sandwich, IL depot and trains pictures,  I want to transition on to Plano pictures and this one does that nicely.

BN E8A 9973 with Train 6, the Denver Zephyr, between Plano and Sandwich, IL at milepost 54.1 in January 1972.  A Roger Puta photo

Nice catch just before Amtrak became our passenger carrier. Not a great carrier but better than the alternative (none) that was rapidly becoming the norm.

Note the date of the photo, it was taken seven months after Amtrak started.

I love the signal differences between carriers back then.  Take that signal bridge, for example: compared to ATSF's at the time, it's a very lightweight, spartan model, vs. Santa Fe's big i-beam bridges.

In hindsight, I wish the Feds had met with the RR's, saying:  "Let us pick what routes we believe are still needed, you RR's keep running them, and we'll cover the losses."

Still a very Burlington-looking consist, presumably taken on a day when the tri-weekly Oakland cars weren't included.
